Travel and accommodation suggestions

As our conference is approaching and we have prepared some suggestions for you regarding accommodation and transport.

TRANSPORT:

You can either fly to Lisbon or Porto via most larger airlines.

From Lisbon airport you take the subway to Oriente train station: 3 stops. You need to get a train to Coimbra or Coimbra-B. The first will leave you closer to downtown and will cost the same. From Lisbon-Oriente you can take a train (https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en) or a bus (https://www.rede-expressos.pt/en) to Coimbra which should take you between 2 and 2h30 hours.

If you fly to Porto, you can get the subway to Porto-Campanhã and get a train to Coimbra or Coimbra-be, similarly. It is a shorter trip on the train but a longer trip on the subway.  From Porto-Campanhã it should only take you between 1h to 1h30hours. Please note that if you book the train tickets in advance they will be much cheaper.

Your other option, albeit an expensive one, is booking a shuttle from the airport directly (https://coimbra.airportshuttle.pt). It might be a good option if you are travelling with other people.

Within Coimbra, which is quite a small city, your best bet is to either walk or take a Taxi. Most rides within the city should not cost you more than 10€. Buses are safe and efficient but there are few. We use this taxi company: http://www.politaxis.pt/indexEnglish.html

ACCOMODATION:

Near to the conference hall we can recommend these hotels:

Casa de São Bento https://www.casadesaobento.com

Penedo da Saudade Suites https://www.penedodasaudade.pt/homecoimbra

Casa da Praça https://www.casadapracacoimbra.com

Hotel Ibn Arrik  https://www.ibn-arrik.pt

Hotel Botânico https://hotelbotanicocoimbra.pt

Please let us know if you have any problems with bookings, maybe we are able to help.

Please note these recommendations are based solely on location and quality of accommodation/price. They offer a wide range of accommodation. There are many more hotels in the city and you can probably find better prices at some of the larger chains such as IBIS or Trypp if you are willing to stay farther from the conference hall.

CITY:

The conference hall  is located near the University of Coimbra main campus and close to its most well known social spot, Praça da República.

https://www.google.pt/maps/place/Centro+Cultural+Penedo+da+Saudade/@40.2073301,-8.423639,16.17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x8dadd40e3348969b!8m2!3d40.2049958!4d-8.4157499

There are a number of restaurants and Heritage spots around here and we’ll be happy to recommend some whilst you are here. The city is very safe and friendly and you will find that it revolves around university life. You are welcome to approach people on the street and ask for directions or help with anything. Most of us will speak English and Spanish and some French.

Please note the city has been built around three hills and that it can be taxing walking up from downtown to the University, even if it is quite beautiful. If you are planning on staying at an hotel downtown please remember the conference hall is up on a hill.

If you need anything you are welcome to call directly our Organising Chair, Filipa Malva, at 00 351 966409016. Our emergency national number is 112.
